China English Language Education Association, also known as CELEA, is the professional organization under the aegis of China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese. Founded in 1981, CELEA aims at promoting academic research in the field of applied linguistics, improving English language teaching in China and encouraging the academic communication among the domestic and the international scholars. CELEA became the affiliate of AILA in 2001， and the affiliate of IATEFL in 2011. Its affiliated journal is Chinese Journal of Applied Linguistics.
The Standing Council, with its secretariat, is the leading organ of CELEA. CELEA has gone through four shifts of leadership since its foundation: Prof. Wang Zuoliang as the President of the 1st Standing Council, Prof. Xu Guozhang as the President of the 2nd, Prof. Hu Wenzhong as the President of the 3rd, and Prof. Wen Qiufang as the President of the 4th. The present Standing Council of CELEA came into power on August 20, 2012.
CELEA focuses both on English language education in general and on different areas of research, including Second Language Writing, English Pronunciation Teaching and Research, Language Testing and Assessment, etc.
CELEA has organized many conferences of various scales in the field of language education and research, including the international conferences on ELT in China every three years, the 6th Pacific Second Language Research Forum in 2008, the 16th World Congress of Applied Linguistics in 2011, the 8th international conference of English as a Lingua Franca(ELF), annual conferences on specific subjects of ELT, and regular national conferences in particular areas of research.
